What Is a Virtual Number? How OTP Numbers Work

A virtual number is a phone number you use online instead of a SIM card: an app sends its SMS to the number, and you read the message in a web panel. Used for a single verification, it’s called an OTP number — you receive one code and the number is released. If you need a number for longer, you rent one for days or months.

What a virtual number is (and what “nokos” means)

A virtual number is a working phone number that isn’t tied to a SIM card in your hand. It is held by a provider, and the SMS messages it receives are shown to you online — in a web panel or through an API. You don’t need a second phone, a second SIM slot or a contract.

In Indonesia these numbers are often called nokos, usually explained as short for “nomor kosong”. Elsewhere you’ll see “SMS verification number”, “OTP number” or “temporary number”. They all mean the same thing: a number you use to receive a code without giving out your own.

Not every virtual number is the same. Numbers from internet calling apps (VoIP numbers) are refused by many sign-up forms. The OTP numbers in our panel are real local mobile numbers from many countries, which apps are generally more willing to accept.

How an OTP number works

  1. Choose the app you want to verify — for example WhatsApp, Telegram or Google — and a country.
  2. The panel shows the exact price and locks it before you buy. If the price changes in the meantime, you are asked first.
  3. You get a number straight away. Enter it in the app, choosing the same country code.
  4. The app sends its SMS, and the code appears in your panel within moments. Most codes arrive in a minute or two.
  5. Type the code into the app. Your verification is done and the number is released.
No SMS? Cancel the number or let it expire, and the money goes back to your balance automatically. You only pay for a code you actually receive.

One-time OTP number or rented number?

Which one you need comes down to a single question: will the app ever ask you for a code again?

  • OTP number (one-time): one verification for one app. It’s the cheapest option, and the number is released afterwards. Good for sign-ups you’ll protect with an email, a password and two-step verification.
  • Rented number: yours for the whole rental — 12 hours, 1, 7, 30, 180 or 365 days, depending on the country — and it receives SMS from any app. You can renew it while it’s active. Good for accounts that ask for codes again, such as a business profile or an online shop.
Rented numbers receive SMS only; they can’t make or take calls. See number rental for terms and prices.

When a virtual number makes sense

  • Privacy: keep your personal number off sign-up forms, marketplaces and public profiles — and away from spam.
  • A separate work or business account: for example WhatsApp Business for your shop, or a Telegram account for a community you manage.
  • Testing: developers and QA teams checking a sign-up flow without using their own phones.
  • Travel and moving abroad: an app that wants a local number from the country where you’ll use it.
If a site only asks you to confirm an email address, a private temporary email may be all you need.

When you should not use one

A virtual number is a tool for accounts you own. Some things belong on your own SIM card:

  • Banking, e-wallets and anything that moves money. These services need a number registered in your name, and they may need to reach you for years.
  • Your main email, your main messaging account and government services — any account you couldn’t afford to lose.
  • Anything that breaks the law or an app’s rules, such as fraud, spam, impersonation or using someone else’s account. It’s forbidden, and accounts used this way are closed.

How much does a virtual number cost?

It depends on the app and the country, and prices move through the day with supply. For every order our panel checks several servers live and shows the exact price before you pay. Compare apps on the pricing page, or see where numbers cost least right now on cheapest countries.

There’s no subscription. You sign up free with Telegram or Google, top up by QRIS or USDT, and use one balance for OTP numbers, rentals, eSIM data and temporary email.

Frequently asked questions

Is a virtual number a real phone number?

Yes. It’s a working mobile number; the difference is that you read its SMS online instead of on a SIM card in your phone.

Can I receive calls on a virtual number?

Not on ours: OTP numbers and rented numbers receive SMS only. When an app offers a call or an SMS, choose SMS.

Can I use the same OTP number again later?

Usually not. An OTP number is for one verification and is released afterwards. If the app will ask for codes again, rent a number instead.

What does “nokos” mean?

It’s Indonesian slang for a virtual number used to receive OTP codes, usually explained as short for “nomor kosong”.

Do I need a SIM card or a second phone?

No. You buy the number in the panel, enter it in the app, and read the code on your screen.
