How to Install an eSIM on iPhone and Android

To install an eSIM, scan its QR code from your phone’s settings: on iPhone, go to Settings → Cellular (or Mobile Data) → Add eSIM → Use QR Code; on Samsung, Settings → Connections → SIM manager → Add eSIM. Do it at home on Wi-Fi before you travel, then switch on the eSIM and its data roaming when you land. Keep your own SIM on for calls and SMS.

Before you start

  • Check that your phone supports eSIM and isn’t locked to a carrier — see eSIM compatible phones.
  • Connect to Wi-Fi. The eSIM downloads over the internet.
  • Show the QR code on a second screen, such as a laptop or another phone, so you can scan it.
  • Install a day or so before you fly. Most plans start counting only when the eSIM first connects at your destination.
With most eSIMs, the QR code can be installed only once. Don’t delete the eSIM after installing it until your trip is over.

How to install an eSIM on iPhone

  1. Open Settings → Cellular (called Mobile Data or Mobile Service in some regions).
  2. Tap Add eSIM (on older iOS versions, Add Cellular Plan).
  3. Choose Use QR Code and scan the code.
  4. Give the new line a label such as “Travel”, so you can tell the lines apart.
  5. When asked about default lines, keep your own number for calls, iMessage and FaceTime. You can pick the eSIM for mobile data now or when you arrive.
You can also scan the code with the Camera app and tap the “Cellular Plan Detected” notice.

How to install an eSIM on Samsung Galaxy

  1. Open Settings → Connections → SIM manager (SIM card manager on some models).
  2. Tap Add eSIM (or Add mobile plan).
  3. Choose Scan QR code from service provider and scan the code.
  4. Confirm and turn the new eSIM on. If it doesn’t appear, restart the phone.
  5. In SIM manager, keep your own SIM for calls and messages, and set the eSIM for mobile data when you arrive.

Google Pixel, Xiaomi, Oppo, Vivo and other Android phones

On a Google Pixel, go to Settings → Network & internet → SIMs → Add SIM, choose to set up an eSIM (on some versions the option reads Download a SIM instead?), and scan the QR code.

Other Android brands use similar menus with different names. Look for SIM cards & mobile networks, Mobile network or SIM manager, then an option to add an eSIM. If you can’t find it, search for “eSIM” in the Settings app.

When you arrive: switch on mobile data

  1. Turn the eSIM line on if it’s off.
  2. Choose the eSIM as your line for mobile data.
  3. Turn on data roaming for the eSIM line. Travel eSIMs usually connect through local partner networks, so they count as roaming.
  4. Turn data roaming off for your home SIM, so it doesn’t use costly roaming data. Keep the home line on to receive SMS, such as codes from your bank, and calls — check your carrier’s rates for incoming calls abroad.
  5. On iPhone, consider turning off Allow Cellular Data Switching, so the phone doesn’t fall back to your home line for data.
WhatsApp stays on your own number; the eSIM only provides data. Plans for popular trips: Japan, Saudi Arabia and Umrah.

eSIM shows “No service”? Try this

  • Make sure you’re in a country your plan covers. Before you arrive, “No service” on the eSIM line is normal.
  • Check that the eSIM line is on, selected for mobile data, and has data roaming turned on for that line.
  • Turn airplane mode on for about 10 seconds and off again, or restart the phone.
  • Choose a network manually: turn off automatic network selection and pick another local network.
  • If your plan came with APN settings, enter them in the mobile network settings for the eSIM line.
  • Check that the plan still has data left and hasn’t passed its end date.

Frequently asked questions

Can I install an eSIM without Wi-Fi?

You need an internet connection to download it. Wi-Fi is the easiest option; mobile data from your home SIM also works if roaming charges won’t apply.

Can I scan the QR code with the same phone?

A phone can’t scan its own screen, so show the code on another device. Some phones also let you enter the eSIM details manually.

Will I keep my WhatsApp number?

Yes. WhatsApp stays on your own number; the eSIM only provides mobile data.

When does my eSIM plan start?

Most plans start counting when the eSIM first connects at your destination, so installing a day early usually doesn’t cost you a day.

Should I delete the eSIM after my trip?

You can once the plan is finished. Most eSIM QR codes can be installed only once, so don’t delete it while you still need the plan.
