Telegram needs a phone number for every account, but it doesn’t have to be your personal one. You can buy one of Telegram’s own anonymous +888 numbers on Fragment, use an OTP number just for the sign-up, or rent a number that keeps receiving SMS. Whichever you choose, set a two-step verification password and a recovery email straight away.
Option 1: Telegram’s anonymous numbers on Fragment
Telegram has its own answer: blockchain-based anonymous numbers starting with +888, sold on the Fragment platform and paid for in TON (Toncoin). You connect a TON wallet to Fragment, buy a number, and sign up in Telegram with it. The login code is shown on Fragment instead of arriving by SMS.
- It works only for Telegram — it can’t receive SMS from other apps.
- Prices vary and are usually higher than for an SMS number, and you need a crypto wallet.
- Keep the wallet safe: losing access to the wallet that holds the number can mean losing access to the account.
- “Anonymous” means the number isn’t tied to a SIM card. It doesn’t make you untraceable.
Option 2: an OTP number for the sign-up
The quickest route is a one-time Telegram number: you pay once for a single verification.
- In the panel, choose Telegram and a country. The price is shown and locked before you buy.
- In Telegram, tap Start Messaging, select the number’s country and type the rest of the number.
- Telegram sends a code. For a new account it usually arrives by SMS and shows up in your panel within moments. Telegram may first ask you to add an email address for login codes — use one you’ll keep.
- Enter the code, add your name, and you’re in.
Option 3: a rented number you keep
An OTP number is released after the sign-up. If you want Telegram to be able to reach you by SMS later — for example for a channel, a bot owner’s account, or a support account used on several devices — rent a number instead. Rentals run from 12 hours to 365 days depending on the country, receive SMS from any app, and can be renewed while active.
The real risk: losing access later
When you log in on a new device, Telegram usually sends the code to the Telegram app on a device where you’re already signed in, and uses SMS or email when it can’t. With an OTP number, the SMS route disappears once the number is released. If you sign out everywhere and Telegram falls back to SMS, you may not get back in.
- Stay signed in on at least one device — ideally two, such as your phone and a computer.
- If Telegram asks for a login email, use an inbox you’ll keep — not a temporary one.
- Check the setting that deletes your account after a period of inactivity (under Privacy and Security), so an account you rarely open isn’t removed.
Turn on two-step verification
Do this right after signing up, whichever number you used. A password protects the account even if someone else gets the number later.
- Open Settings → Privacy and Security → Two-Step Verification.
- Create a password, and a hint if you like.
- Add a recovery email and confirm it with the code Telegram sends.
Hide your number from other users
Under Settings → Privacy and Security → Phone Number, choose who can see your number (for example Nobody) and who can find you by it. People can still reach you through your @username.
If privacy is your only goal, this may be enough on its own: you can keep your own number on Telegram and simply hide it.
Which way to use Telegram without your personal number?
- Fragment number: a Telegram-only number held in a crypto wallet, if you’re comfortable with TON.
- OTP number: a quick, low-cost sign-up that you protect with a password and a recovery email.
- Rented number: if you want to keep receiving SMS on the number for weeks or months.
Frequently asked questions
Can I create a Telegram account without a phone number?
No. Telegram needs a number for every account, but it can be a Fragment anonymous number, an OTP number or a rented number instead of your personal one.
What are +888 numbers on Telegram?
They are Telegram’s anonymous numbers, sold on the Fragment platform and paid for in TON. They work only for Telegram, and the login code is shown on Fragment.
Why didn’t Telegram send me an SMS?
Telegram often sends the code to an app where you’re already signed in, or asks for an email first. If you’re using an OTP number and nothing arrives, cancel — the refund is automatic.
Is it safe to use a virtual number for Telegram?
Yes, for an account you own. Set a two-step verification password and a recovery email straight away, and stay signed in on at least one device.
